A gate driver produces a high-current drive input for the gate of a power semiconductor and can be controlled with low voltage signals from a controller IC.
Power semiconductor devices (BJTs, MOSFETs and IGBTs) are used in high power applications. These devices require appropriate drive circuits so that they are turned on and off properly. The drive circuit should be designed in such a way that the speed of switching on and off be high; in fact, the driver must be able to supply the required voltage and current. Totem pole and push pull circuits are commonly used as drive circuits. Opto-couplers (opto-isolator) are also used for isolation between power and control circuits. IR2113, IR2110, TLP250 and ICL7667 are examples of driver ICs and 6N137 is an example of fast Opto-couplers. Also pulse transformers can be used as isolated driver, but due to the possibility of saturation, it can’t be used in applications with low switching frequency.
